Creativity: Learning Outcome 6, Painting Signs
January 2, 2021
This summer was a tough one on the Houston community, the country, and the world. Life felt heavy- between the wildfires in Australia, the coronavirus, and the rampant killings of Black men and women in the US. I was feeling pretty powerless to do anything to help change the situation of these incidents that were affecting millions, and with corona happening, I was wary of going to the large protests that were occuring in Houston. However, in my neighborhood, hand painted "Black Lives Matter" signs were beginning to appear in front yards. It felt like a really big bonding point in my community and I decided that I wanted to be apart of it.
So one day I went and did a pick up form Hobby Lobby, buying signs and paint and paint brushes. At home I layed down a piece of fabric to paint on in my backyard and got to work. My mom and I sat out in the hot Houston summer sun and painted our signs. My mom's was black and white and mine was colorful, with messages of "Black Lives Matter" and "Equality for All." We waited for them to dry and put them in the front yard. I really enjoyed this activity, and it made me feel like I was doing something a least a little impactful.
